Ray Lewis Biography

Ray Anthony Lewis, an American football linebacker, was born on May 15, 1975 in Bartow Florida. Ray emerged from tiny Lakeland, Florida, to become one of National Football League's (NFL) most defensive players of modern era. Ray's passion for football grew out of his love for wrestling, a sport in which he excelled at school level.

On the football field Lewis displayed the same kind of passion and desire. Ray attended the University of Miami where he became a starter for the Hurricanes' final 5 games. He led the Hurricanes in tackles for 22 consecutive games and led the Big East conference, in tackles, for two straight seasons, one of the games best all round player .His prowess in football attracted the attention of National Football League and in just five seasons, Ray was selected for four consecutive Pro bowl teams and was named to USA Today’s all-rookie team in his first season. He also earned full football scholarship at the Miami University. In 1997 Ray received the John Mackey award. In 1997, 1999, 2000 and 2001 season Ray was named Ravens MVP. In 2000 Ray was named NFL defensive player of the year.

Throughout his career Lewis has built a reputation as a leader and intimidating force at middle linebacker. He has led his team in tackles in nine of his eleven seasons. His defenses were consistently ranked among the best during his stint. However Lewis accomplishment as a football player was overshadowed by the events of January 31, 2000, and tarnished his image in the public’s eye. Following a party, Lewis' friend Joseph Sweeting and Reginald Oakley allegedly got into the fight with Richard Lollar (24) and Jacinth Baker (21) near Cobalt Night Club in upscale Buckhead, Georgia. Lollar and Baker died of stabbed wounds. Lewis, Sweeting and Oakley were charged with six counts of murder and Lewis was jailed in Atlanta. Since the murder allegations, Lewis image has slowly recovered and today he is considered one of the most dominant linebackers in the history of National Football League.
