What Did Archimedes Invent ?

Archimedes went to school in Alexandria and learnt mathematics under Euclid. At that time Euclid was a very famous mathematician. Archimedes was very interested in mathematics since childhood as his father was an astronomer. So, computations were not something new to him. He spent most of his time solving new problems, and also arriving at conclusions.

Some of the greatest inventions in the world were made by Archimedes. These inventions were very simple in functionality and even the theories he came up with were extremely logical. Archimedes had made most of his inventions when he was living in Syracuse.
He invented the Archimedes screw. This screw is a hydraulic one which brought water from a lower level to a higher level. He made this screw when he was ordered by the King of Syracuse to build a huge boat to take all the soldiers from his army for war. He wanted a naval vessel. However, Archimedes did not know how to remove the excess water that would leak into the boat, and that is how he came up with the Archimedes screw. This screw is used even today in several industries.
Archimedes principle is another great invention which has laid the foundation for several more great inventions in the world. He discovered that every object that has been immersed in liquid would displace a certain amount of liquid due to the pressure created by the liquid surrounding the object. The weight of this object is equal to the displace liquid.
He also invented the magnifying glass. However it was a much bigger contraption when he made it. He made the magnifying glass so that the Roman soldiers could light fire when they were on the boat sailing to war.
He invented the catapult to protect Syracuse from Roman invasions. This device was used to hurl big balls of burning fire at the invading enemy army.
