History Of Liberia  

Liberia was formed in the year 1822 which was populated with the freed slaves. It was first a colony and then became a part of the commonwealth and got independence in the year 1847 by taking the helping hand of the American colonization society. The freed slave’s descendents who were called Americo-Liberians remained in control of Liberia politically and socially till 1980.

The wealth and the power were distributed unequally and this led to the conflicts in the recent past.

In the year 1923, a politician and scholar called Abayomi Karnga told that the division of status was based on the hierarchical caste system. The top caste included the officials of Americo Liberians, who were people with light complexion with the white and black ancestry. They were followed by the Americo Liberians with dark skin who were farmers and laborers. The third place was occupied by the recaptives who were also called the Congos. These were the people who were rescued Africans by the US navy when they were in US ships as slaves. And the last place is given to the native African Liberians.More...

Liberia was formed as the home for the freed slaves in the year 1822 by American colonization society after failing several times. They were first settled near the area of Monrovia. In the year 1847, the republic of Liberia was formed under the similar constitution as United States.

Although Liberia had relations with United States earlier, in the 1870s Liberia traded mostly with the European countries especially with the countries like Germany, Great Britain and Netherlands. In the late 19th century, the British and French took control over the Liberian territory.

European influence diminished after 1926 as the United States set up a rubber company called Firestone, which started to establish large rubber plantation in country. Firestone employed most of the people and rubber became the leading export for many decades.More...

History Of Us And Liberia Relations

Liberia started its relations with the US in the year 1819 as the US Congress sanctioned $100,000 to establish Liberia. Liberia was officially recognized by the United States in the year 1862, and both the countries they had good economic, military and diplomatic ties till the 1990s.

At the time of World War 2, Liberia joined hands with the allied forces and Monrovia became the host to the allied logistics bases. Liberia also got the rubber plantations of Firestone which was set up after World War 1. This plantation manufactured large number of arms to help the allied forces in World War 2.

The relationship between Liberia and the United States strained during 1971 and 1980 because of the president of Liberia William R Tolbert who had diplomatic relationship with the Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc countries. In the year 1978 jimmy carter the president of United States was the first one to make official presidential trip to Liberia. In the 1980s, the United States faked close relationship with Liberia in the cold war to repress the movements by socialists and the Marxists going on in Africa.
