Belgium was named after Belgae, an ancient Gaul who was a part of Belgica, a roman province which was later attacked by Julius Caesar during 57 BC. However, in the fifth century the Franks took over Belgium. Later, it went to Charlemagne and Lotharingia in the eight and ninth century respectively.
