Netherlands Brief History  

Most nations around the world considered farming as their main occupation and still many do follow it. Netherlands was no different either. Farming was carried on a large scale at around 4500 BC. They used simple tools to carry forward this occupation. Later at 1900 BC bronze was used to sharpen tools, followed by use of iron in 750 BC.

The Romans managed to capture Belgium as well as Netherlands. They developed the whole of both the places by constructing towns and roads. The Roman Empire could not survive beyond the 4th century and collapsed easily. The Germans, Saxons, Frisians, Franks took advantage of this situation and took over Netherlands. In the mean time, Christianity was adopted followed by Calvinism. The Vikings crashed badly during the ninth and tenth centuries, but trade was not affected. Later, the Dukes of Burgundy took over Netherlands in the early 15th century. This was the period when people were forced to get converted into Calvinists.

Prince William fought with the Spanish sailors in 1572 to capture the Dutch towns and cities. In the year 1579.They signed a treaty known as the Union of Utrecht and gained independence in 1581.However, Spain accepted their independency only in 1648. Soon after the French revolution, the Batavian Republic was formed when Napoleon was crowned the King of Netherlands. He was defeated by William of Orange, with the latter been crowned the new king.

He wanted Belgium and Netherlands to be united and with great force and struggle Belgium managed to rebel and gain its independence. During the First World War, German Kaiser was granted shelter in Netherlands. The Netherlands soon faced problems like depression, and unemployment after the War.

Again, in the Second World War, it suffered great damages and then began the worst periods for Dutch. They were shot by Germans, and were also kept hungry. The Nazis looted the Netherlands badly alongside killing many. Netherlands became a member of the European Union in the year 1957 and considered Euro as its main currency. Presently, the Netherlands enjoys quite prominence and is an important market with nearly 16 million people.
